Illustration is a depiction or explanation of an idea. Good illustration is art or the idea brought to life. With modern illustration the intent is typically to sell something. Whether that be an idea, concept, demonstration, story, product, service or more. A multitude of various media can be deployed in illustration.

Representational Illustration
Representational illustration is a way of depicting an object or subject that is clearly identifiable as something that already exists in the real world. Often times representational illustration is used as a substitute for photographs. Many times photography cannot depict an object or subject in a particular way that will make it look as it should and bring about an intended impression or result. The above illustration is representational artwork not a photograph.
Technical Illustration
Technical Illustration is illustration meant to visually communicate information of a technical nature. Static and dynamic images are used to explain the nature of technical relationships. Good illustrations convey the data or message with out making the viewer feel confused. Technical illustrations generally have to describe to a nontechnical audience and enhance the viewer’s interest and understanding.
Patent illustration
The applicant for a patent is required to furnish a set of patent illustrations of a new invention. This is true for objects of manufacture as well as processes and plants. The drawings must show every feature of the invention specified in the claims. The patent drawings are required to be in a special form. The drawings must be such that they can be readily understood by persons using the patent descriptions.
